Del Mar Underground Construction Project

The Del Mar Underground Construction Project will improve the operation and reliability of Pasadena Water and Power’s electric sub-transmission system along Del Mar Boulevard between Michigan Avenue and Oak Knoll Avenue.

The project will include trenching and the installation of new electrical conduits and vaults along the thoroughfare and within the City right-of-way. Phase 1 of the project began in January 2022 with the total duration of this project estimated to be 2 to 3 months long. Once this work is complete, PWP will begin Phase 2 to install electrical cables within those vaults, which is expected to last approximately one month. The working hours for trenching, electrical equipment installation and pavement restoration will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

During the construction, there will be some lane closures and periodic road closures. The work will be executed in segments to minimize traffic disruptions. Detours will be provided where necessary. All closures will be clearly marked and temporary traffic control detours signs will be posted at all times. At this time, no service interruptions or power outages are planned for the duration of the project.

These planned upgrades to PWP’s energy delivery system will help modernize the City’s local energy delivery infrastructure, and help increase the energy capacity and reliability of Pasadena’s energy transmission system.
